SkyBitz Company History

SkyBitz was born out of innovation, which has been the backbone of the company’s success. The company was originally founded as Eagle Eye Technologies, Inc. in 1992 and was awarded two contracts to design a satellite based tracking system by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in 1994. This was the start of what is now the industry leader in remote and unpowered asset tracking technology.

Because of its strong foundation based on innovation and its intimate knowledge of customer challenges and successes analyzed by the brightest minds in the world, SkyBitz continues to grow and has proven it can build for the future. Today the company leverages its expertise in telematics to create new asset tracking solutions and create new applications for use in new markets.

SkyBitz has introduced products and solutions that reflect the company's goal to provide robust yet low power consumption remote asset tracking anywhere in the world, ensuring customers access to the information they need to respond to conditions with accuracy and speed.

Our goal is to continue to improve our technology and create new uses to address new industries and new markets while we also provide our customers with robust solutions that meet their business needs. We will continue to innovate and to lead the industry, while making sure that we focus solving the problems of the customers that rely on our technology.

  • 1992 - Eagle Eye Technologies Inc., founded.
  • 1994 - DARPA awards two contracts to design satellite based tracking system.
  • 1997 - The company received a grant from the Virginia Center for Innovative Technology to team up with and utilize the talents of Professor Warren Stutzman at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.
  • 1998 - The United States Air Force awarded Eagle Eye the first of another two contracts to miniaturize the tracking system and reduce its power consumption. Over the next few years, the company invented and received patents on many of the technologies used by SkyBitz today.
  • 2002 - SkyBitz announced its commercial launch.
  • 2003 - SkyBitz acquired a $1 million grant from the Transportation Security Administration for implementing our Global Locating System (GLS) technology at the Port of Long Beach.
  • 2005 - SkyBitz kept the momentum going with the acquisition of several key customers in the transportation industry including R&R Trucking, Tri-State Motor, Quaity Distribution and J Rayl. Company selected as a "2005 Future 50" technology company by SmartCEO Magazine for its strategic direction and customer growth.
  • 2006 - SkyBitz named a “Rising Star” in Deloitte & Touche USA LLP's Technology Fast 50 program for the state of Virginia. This award reinforced SkyBitz's continued momentum in the market. SkyBitz also announced Smart Sensor Tracking technology to optimize trailer utilization, improve reporting and maximize security. Company became the official tracking solution for the delivery of the United States Capitol Christmas Tree.
  • 2007 - SkyBitz had acquired more than 400 customers in North America and added two new products to its existing suite: a Cargo Sensor and Tractor/Trailer ID. Company was ranked in Inc. 500, the Deloitte Wireless Fast 50, Deloitte Technology Fast 500, The Deloitte Technology Fast 50 for the states of Virginia and Maryland, and the Heavy Duty Trucking Nifty Fifty Award.
  • 2008 - SkyBitz was ranked in Inc. 5000, the Deloitte Technology Fast 50 for Virginia, and was awarded the Frost & Sullivan Product Innovation Leadership Award as well as the Heavy Duty Trucking Nifty Fifty Award.
  • 2009 - DARPA released a feature case study documenting how SkyBitz successfully launched DARPA-funded technology into private, government and international markets. SkyBitz announced a partnership with Largest Digital Wireless M2M Services Provider to Expand Cellular-Based GPS Tracking Options – KORE Telematics. Company announced it received Defense Transportation Tracking System II (DTTS) certification by The Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Commands (SDDC). 
  • 2010 - SkyBitz announced the launch of its newest asset management solution based on its patented Global Locating System (GLS) technology - the SkyBitz GLS400 Mobile Terminal. SkyBitz and Iridium Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: IRDM) announced a strategic partnership that will position Iridium as the first-ever provider of two-way global MSS for SkyBitz. Through this partnership, the companies are developing a unique, two-way, remote asset tracking and monitoring solution.
  • 2011 - SkyBitz was named to Inc. 5000 for the fifth consecutive year and was named “Corporate Distinguished Service Award Winner” by National Defense Transportation Association. SkyBitz was selected by the Army & Air Force Exchange Service to increase trailer utilization and security for North American and European operations. 
  • 2012 - SkyBitz expanded its footprint with the launch of the new Iridium-based global solution, the Galaxy (GTP) Series. SkyBitz was acquired by Telular Corporation, a global leader in connecting businesses and machines over wireless networks. Henry Popplewell was named Senior Vice President and General Manager of SkyBitz.
  • 2013 - SkyBitz launched new trend reporting features for enhanced analytics via InSight Trends, a flexible and customizable visual dashboard. SkyBitz launched Falcon GXT3000, a custom built cellular product designed to deliver accurate, real-time data. SkyBitz also signed a new value-added reseller agreement with Pana-Pacific.  Avista Capital Partners acquired Telular Corporation. SkyBitz operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of Telular, and remains at its headquarters in Virginia.
  • 2014 - SkyBitz Introduces the Industry’s First Trailer Tracking Subscription Platform – “SkyBitz as a Service” –  an entirely new way for customers to employ its trusted asset management solutions without any upfront capital investment. SkyBitz won two awards from M2M Evolution Magazine, the M2M Product of the Year Award for Exceptional Innovation and theM2M Evolution Asset Tracking Award for the Falcon GXT3000 asset management product. 
  • 2015 – SkyBitz launched new analytics dashboard, InSight Now, designed to deliver the important real-time data needed to better plan and respond quickly to changing conditions. SkyBitz announced a partnership and the integration with PSI tire pressure information alongside SkyBitz’s location data. SkyBitz won two awards from the 2015 IoT Evolution Asset Tracking Award for its asset tracking device, Falcon GXT2000 and 2015 IoT Evolution Product of the Year Award for its web applications, SkyBitz InSight. Henry Popplewell was named President.  SkyBitz acquired Reltima, LLC and GPS North America, Inc., two leading commercial telematics companies in the local fleet management market, re-branded as “SkyBitz Local Fleets”. SkyBitz acquired SMARTLogix, a Leading IoT Provider of Petroleum Management, Inventory and Transportation Logistics Solutions.
  • 2016- SkyBitz launched its chassis tracking and container detection solution, the Falcon GXT3100i for the intermodal industry. We also launched the world’s first ever two-way global satellite communication and UL913,  IECEx/ATEX Zone 0 certified tracking device, the Galaxy GTP4050.
