Is that trailer empty?
Knowing the answer to that simple question - without having to open a trailer's doors and look inside- can help maximize use of the asset, save drivers from wasting hours of service searching for an empty unit and ultimately enable carriers to operate with fewer trailers, fleet and technology experts said. The addition of cargo sensors that detect whether a trailer is empty or loaded enables a number of trailer-tracking systems to answer the question definitively and remotely, vendors and fleet users of the technology systems said.
Another important question: Are the doors open on that trailer? Advances in trailer monitoring make it possible to answer that as well, vendors said, citing improved sensor technology, including more energy-efficient microprocessors, and batteries that work longer or that can be efficiently recharged to live longer.
